Description

A now decommissioned FSR that runs along the Downton Creek. In 2021 the first bridge structure was deemed unsafe for vehicular travel and barricaded by district officials. Since then, the barricades have been moved by persons unknown allowing enough space for Tacoma sized trucks and smaller to squeeze through. Please note the bridge is still considered unsafe for travel by vehicle, so drive at your own risk. The barricades may be pushed back at any time, access is not guaranteed.

The road was closed today due to the condition of one of the bridges. The first two on the road are passable but the third is badly damaged.

Road is in good condition aside from that 1 documented degrading bridge. probably unsafe but I did take it at speed in a tacoma and survived. see other reports and reconsider your choices - past fork up to the lake the road becomes very VERY overgrown - road base is fine but I do not recommend unless you are willing to either spend a lot of time trimming back alders or having the most pinstripes a truck can be pinstriped

The 4th bridge into the Downton area is getting much worse - and NOT safe to drive on!!! It's gotten a lot worse in the last 3 weeks, so many of the track boards are gone now (which are needed to distribute weight across the bridge) and people are driving on the support beams underneath, of which a couple of them are also now rotting and deteriorating heavily. I would not drive on this bridge again!!! I asked my dad (who used to design and build bridges like these for powerline companies) and he rated it 5-9 unsafe with 10 being most unsafe. I had brought a few boards up from the lower bridges and got across on track on just one side, but they are not secured, and some were already rotting, so won't last long.
Jesse Scharf reported on: Aug 05, 2025
The road is slowly getting worse but still good condition. No pinstriping to Mount Seton trailhead. The 4th bridge could use a new deck or track board repair
Francis Bailey reported on: Jun 22, 2025
Drove all the way to kilometer 16. After the Viola Lake area around kilometer 12 the road is completely overgrown. Despite that the road bed was intact and we managed to plow our way to a clearing at 16km. We walked the remainder on the following day and it’s no worse than the previous section. I did lose the housing on my mirror as a sacrifice to the alder gods
Gavin Luymes reported on: Jun 06, 2025
Open and in decent condition to the Seton trailhead. No waterbars, but some rocky sections may present clearance or traction challenges for 2wd or low-clearance vehicles.
Raphael Smith reported on: Jun 01, 2025
Drove 9km in to 1378m at the Seton

Drove to the Mount Seton TH at 1378m, 9km in. The bridge off Hwy 99 is still in. Snow free. Road was a 2WD friendly cruise in excellent condition.
Matt Gunn reported on: May 22, 2025
Drove to 1540 m to reach Viola Lake Trailhead. road is in good shape to Holly Lake turn off, then bushy but passable in smaller 4Wd (Geo Tracker) to Viola Lake parking. Bridge at start of Downton Creek still unblocked and easily passable.
Julia Hart reported on: May 11, 2025
Barriers have been moved to the side and the bridge is in tact. Flagging is present around the bridge and seems to indicate impending logging.
Francis Bailey reported on: Nov 30, 2024
Did not grab a photo but large blockades are in front of the bridge. I counted at least 3 in a staggered position
Steven Song reported on: Nov 03, 2024
No specific update since last one. Pin tripping isn’t terrible for veteran SWBC peak baggers but might be intolerable for the averaged. 10cm accumulated snow at 1540 m elevation trail head for Melvin
Aa Aa reported on: Oct 12, 2024
Road in pretty good condition, bridges are all in, the first 5km are steepish, rocky and a bit wet but any kind of SUV could easily make it, after that it eases off and no cross ditches or any clearance is needed to the Downton Lakes trailhead up DOWNTON CREEK BR 02, just that after the Seton trailhead/9km it's light to moderate pinstriping for that last 4km.
SWBC Peak Baggers reported on: Sep 28, 2024
Mike K reports that bridge repairs are ongoing for Downton Creek. However, according to the resource district manager/engineer these repairs are being carried out by a mining operating to access their site. The repairs are not up to public standards and so will necessitate a gate.

4 barricades now, and some deck boards pulled. There are some planks stretched out for bikes/dirt bikes to get across. After the bridge the road is fine too.

The bridge beams are heavy and solid, it's the abutment that MoF is apparently concerned with.
Stephan Bernhard reported on: May 21, 2024
Just after the blocks, bridge is destroyed
Sean Caulfield reported on: May 20, 2024
The lock blocks at KM0 bridge are back.
Michael Kennedy reported on: Feb 20, 2024
Barricade blocks are far apart-probably passable for an F250. Look like they may have been set by a crane-equipped hwys truck. Question is : Is Downton subject to a seasonal open/closed policy?
Liseth Miranda reported on: Oct 29, 2023
Blockade is still Open but the road is cover in snow, for anyone driving the road will need high clearance vehicle and winter tires. We parked at 1600mt elevation where there is an open spot.
Sean Caulfield reported on: Oct 22, 2023
Measured the lock blocks before the 0KM bridge at 95" apart (+/-) - for reference, we saw a couple of full size trucks (F150/Silverado) had made it past. Road in decent shape to Seton TH, should be fine to there in most 2wd even - hardest part is probably the far side of the first bridge. After Seton TH to Holly Lake turnoff it's narrower, couple spots where a bit of clearance helps but no major washouts or waterbars. Some very small thin alders will brush against your vehicle, but wouldn't consider it too "pinstripy".
Francis Bailey reported on: Oct 22, 2023
As Sean, mentioned the road is in overall great shape, although I only drove as far as the Mount Seton trailhead.
Sean Caulfield reported on: Sep 30, 2023
The lock blocks at the 0km bridge on Downton Creek FSR are still pushed apart, easily wide enough for a Nissan Frontier (could drive straight through without a spotter). Probably 18" width to spare so a full size truck can likely squeeze through. Road in 2wd condition to Seton trailhead, if you can get your Prius across the bridge you're good all the way. Didn't drive beyond Seton TH but have heard Holly Lake TH is accessible as well, not sure on road condition on this stretch.
